Job Description:                                 Psych Department Assistant B


Department:                                         Psychiatric Services


Responsible To:                                   Nurse Manager, Adult Inpatient Services


Education/Experience:                       High School Diploma or equivalency required.  Computer knowledge required. Medical office experience highly desired.


Licensure/Certification:                     Current ACT Certificate (required within 30-days).  BLS required.


Physical Requirements:                      Requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, handling, feeling, talking, hearing, frequent mental/visual strain.  Occasional heavy work (exerting 50-100 lbs of force up to 1/3 of the time); frequently exerting moderate force (21-50lbs of force up to 2/3 of the time); and constantly exerting force (10-20 lbs of force) to move objects and patients.


Environmental Conditions:               Primarily works inside (75% of time) but may experience the following hazards: biological, radiation, and stress.


Occupational Exposure:                    Category I= Job involves tasks or procedures that have exposure to blood and potentially infectious materials during the performance of duties.



  1. Maintains an inventory of office, chart, clerical and patient care supplies on the unit. Answers telephone using good customer service skills, takes and relays messages. Responds to phone inquiries quickly and appropriately in a manner that addresses the needs of the caller, documenting each in accordance with established hospital procedures.
  2. Assists the Nurse Manager in making staffing calls and posts staff schedule daily. Maintains charts on each unit keeping records up to date; assists in compiling new admission charts; and checks all new admission charts for completeness. Coordinates consults and tests, making appointments and arrangements for transportation, and follows up for consult completion.
  3. Accurately transcribes non-medical orders per department policy. Enters orders into MEDITECH computer system daily under the supervision of RN. Completes and pulls charges for all patient supplies daily and forwards to Business Office. Ensures discharges and room charges are entered into the computer system daily. Assists with admissions, transfers, and discharges as requested. Ensures that all charts are checked off at end of shift.
  4. Utilizes proper procedure for obtaining, charging for, and returning unit supplies and equipment. Maintains nursing station and all supply/equipment areas in a clean and organized fashion.
  5. Orients new staff to computer usage, phone system, and location of supplies and equipment.
  6. Assists in obtaining blood draws according to established procedures. Ensures that lab specimens, mail and interdepartmental correspondence reach its proper destination in a timely fashion. Assists with 1:1 patient supervision and restraint care. Assists with providing direct patient care when acuity and census is high. Assists physician with H & P and medical consults.
  7. Provides patient supervision in dayroom and at meal times.  Routes aftercare forms for County Mental Health discharged patients to appropriate agency.
  8. Maintains ongoing awareness of patient acuity levels and reports changes to the Charge Nurse.
  9. Interprets hospital policies to visitors or staff and communicates appropriately using good “guest relations” skills.
  10. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to assist with the provision of care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned area (adolescent, adult, and geriatric).
  11. Performs other job related duties as requested.
