Job Description:                                 REGISTERED NURSE/CHARGE NURSE - OR


Department:                                         Operating Room Services


Responsible To:                                   Director of Operating Room Services


Education/Training:                            BSN preferred. In lieu of BSN, commitment to earn BSN within an established period of time may be required.


Licensure:                                             Valid Florida RN License. BLS and ACLS required.


Experience:                                          One year Operating Room experience required.           


Skills & Abilities:                  Ability to handle conflict and perform multi-tasks at the same time.


Physical Requirements:                      Good physical condition to continually sit; frequently stand, walk, bend/stoop and squat; occasionally kneel, reach above shoulder level, and balance; ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, pull maximum over 50lbs with assistance; must continually be able to see, hear, speak, and use both hands to easily communicate.


Environmental Conditions:               Primarily works inside (75% of the time) and may experience the following hazards:  biological, needles and sharps, radiation, stress, noise, vibration, dust, fumes, and occasional temperatures extremes.


Occupational Exposure:                    Category I = Job involves tasks or procedures that have exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials during the performance of duties.



  1. Directs and supervises the activities for each assigned case to ensure smooth, safe operation.  Coordinates well with charge nurse between cases and continually updates on the surgical case progress; prevents operational delays by anticipating potential problems and coordinating with all team members through established policy and procedure.  Ensures the patients are properly prepared for surgery by checking chart completeness and pre-op assessments.  Informs the appropriate persons when any abnormal findings are identified during pre-op visit.
  2. Promotes physical comfort and safety in lifting and positioning patients by demonstrating the knowledge of circulatory and respiratory functioning.  Comforts identified patient fears by giving concise explanations and reassurances, by staying with the patient and by providing a quiet environment in the pre-op holding or intra-operative OR suite.  Prepares operative skin, administers medication and other therapeutic proceedings and observes the patient’s response quickly notifying appropriate party of significant change.
  3. Demonstrates the ability to recognize and intervene in life threatening emergencies, including the administration of emergency drugs, and defibrillator or other emergency treatment.  Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned area infant to geriatric.
  4. Ensures sterility of all equipment and surgical supplies.  Monitors sterile technique and handles breaks in technique appropriately.  Ensures that all equipment and supplies are available and in working order for each use.  Follows policy and procedure for handling instruments, sponges, and skin closures/sutures.
  5. Anticipates surgeon’s requirements and assists physician as necessary with procedures.
  6. Demonstrates the proper procedure for obtaining, charging for, and returning supplies/equipment and maintains adequate supply levels through the use of accurate inventory control.  Records and reports data required for hospital, patient, and nursing service records and completes all charge tickets as required.
  7. Assists in directing and teaching para-medical team members including volunteers.  Uses good Guest Relations skills to keep families informed of the progress of their loved ones.  Demonstrates respect and dignity for the privacy of all patients and guests.
  8. May work in specialty areas such as Neuro and Open Heart Surgery as needed after appropriate training and demonstration of competency.
  9. Performs other job related duties as assigned by Director of Surgical Services.
