Job Description:                                                     PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN

Patient Care Technicians (PCT) assist patients with healthcare needs, activities of daily living and provide bedside care, including basic nursing procedures, all under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN); PCT’s also function as Phlebotomists by performing blood collection by venipuncture, dermal puncture and pediatric dermal puncture, as appropriate, under the supervision of an RN.


Responsible To:                                   Department Director or Administrator.


Education/Training:                            High school graduate or equivalent required. Requires State Certified Nursing Assistant and minimum one year recent hands-on patient care experience in a healthcare facility or work environment, other than Home Health care; 2nd semester RN student (completed C.N.A. skills competency) or Graduate Nurse. Successful completion of Phlebotomy course strongly preferred.  BLS required. 


Skills & Abilities:                  Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of principles of patient hygiene, comfort and safety measures (will be required to pass competencies); experience as a nursing assistant, medical assistant, or phlebotomist helpful. Good oral and written communication skills required. 


Physical requirements:                       Requires constant walking and standing; frequent stooping, kneeling, reaching, handling, feeling, talking, and mental/visual strain.  Occasional heavy work  (exerting 50-100 lbs of force up to 1/3 of the time, frequently exerting moderate force (21-50 lbs of force up to 2/3 of the time) and constantly exerting force  (10-20 lbs of force) to move patients and objects.


Environmental Conditions:               Primarily works inside in an air-conditioned environment (>75% of the time) and may experience the following hazards; biological, needles and sharps, radiation, stress, noise, vibration, dust, fumes, and occasional temperature extremes. 


Occupational Exposure:                    Category I= Job involves tasks or procedures that have exposure to blood and potentially infectious materials during the performance of duties. 


Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Assist with admissions, discharges, and transferring of patients, obtains and documents vital signs & weight accurately and reports abnormal results to the Nurse; documents appropriately on the electronic medical record.
  2. Provides assistance for personal care to patients including bathing, dressing, eating, toileting and transportation.
  3. Places or removes overlay mattress on bed, if appropriate; keeping rooms neat.
  4. May apply sterile and non-sterile soaks and/or dressings as instructed.
  5. Records intake/output accurately and timely, sends urine specimens to labs as ordered, performsdaily phlebotomy as ordered seeking assistance after two venipuncture sticks to obtain patient’s specimen, collects and labels tubes properly using hospital protocol and performs bedside glucose monitoring as instructed by nurse.
  6. Assists with meeting patients’ dietary needs (i.e. snacks for diabetics).
  7. Assists with answering patient call lights; assists patients in moving, turning, getting out of bed and ambulation.
  8. Obtains supplies and equipment as needed for patients and restocks supplies when needed, ensuring that all supplies used are properly charged to the patients; assists physicians as indicated.
  9. Perform other job related duties as assigned by Director.
