Job Description:                                 BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CLINICAL SPECIALIST

 

Department:                                         Psychiatric Services

 

Responsible To:                                   Director of Psychiatric Services

 

Education/Training ED:                      Master’s Degree in Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Mental Health Counseling, or other Mental Health related Master’s Degree program that is License eligible by the State of Florida. 

 

License:                                                Florida license in Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or Mental Health Counseling preferred.  BLS and ACT required.

 

Experience:                                           Minimum of three (2) years mental health experience in the Clinical Responsibilities listed below.

 

Physical Requirements:                      Requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, handling, feeling, talking, hearing, and frequent mental/visual strain.  Occasional heavy work (exerting 50-100 lbs of force up to 1/3 of the time); frequently exerting moderate force (21-50lbs of force up to 2/3 of the time); and constantly exerting force (10-20 lbs of force) to move objects and patients.

 

Environmental Conditions:               Primarily works inside (75% of time) but may experience the following hazards: biological, radiation and stress.

 

Occupational Exposure:                    Category I= Job involves tasks or procedures that have exposure to blood and potentially infectious materials during the performance of duties.

  

Skills/Requirements

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

I   Clinical Responsibilities

  1. Prepares psychosocial assessment and diagnostic formulation within 48 hours of admission for use in assessment, treatment planning, discharge planning, and Level of Care (LOC) considerations.  Confers with members of the professional clinical staff throughout all patient processes.
  2. Demonstrates knowledge and expertise in the use of the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM) IVR, established standards of professional and ethical practice, Florida Mental Health statutes, and hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  3. Provides clinical consultation to staff in the Emergency Department and on the Medical Surgical units regarding patients in mental health crisis.  Demonstrates clinical leadership in directing staff in the de-escalation of patients and/or their families in mental health crisis.
  4. Provides patient with written information about their illness and confirm that the patient has received information about their psychotropic medications.  Provides information about and referral to community programs.
  5. Assist patient with obtaining medications. Compiles a referral source database, including ALF, nursing homes, substance abuse facilities, homeless shelters, etc. in order to provide the least restrictive, appropriate placement. 
  6. Demonstrates expertise in The Florida Mental Health Act -FS 394 (“The Baker Act”), possesses a thorough understanding of its application, and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements.  Attends annual Baker Act Training.

II Crisis Evaluation Responsibilities:

  1. Evaluate and respond to any urgent crisis of patient and/or their families.  Assess needs for care, provide direct crisis counseling and take immediate steps to stabilize clients in acute distress.  Review incoming crisis calls and provide immediate counseling
  2. Provide patient and their family with education, comfort, and relative information in accordance with their care as needed.
  3. Consult and confer with Mental Health Unit and Emergency Department staff.  Communicate with Physicians, nurses, police officers, clergy and/or referral sources and agencies. 
  4. Maintain all records and documentation according to Hospital policy and procedure.
  5. Is responsible for utilization reviews including providing all relevant clinical information to insurance companies for any pre-certification of hospitalization. Refers patients to appropriate services with complete instructions for follow up care, and makes contact with referral source to provide information to ensure the best out come for the patient.
  6. Compiles and updates insurance company/managed care organization data base including the utilization review policies and procedures, contact names, and phone numbers.  Compiles an annual patient database, identifying source of reimbursement, DOS, authorization numbers, and date and amount of reimbursement.
