Job Description:                                 ACCESSIONER

Will include some weekends and some holidays

 

Department:                                         Laboratory

               

Responsible To:                                   Chemistry Supervisor

 

Education/Experience:                       High School Diploma or equivalent required.  Excellent organizational skills and ability to cope with high level of stressful activity.

 

License/Certification:                         Phlebotomy or comparable area preferred.

 

Physical Requirement:       Requires constant walking and standing, frequent stooping, kneeling, reaching, handling, feeling, talking, hearing and mental/visual strain.

 

Environmental Conditions:               Primarily works inside (99% of time) but may experience the following hazards: constant exposure to biological (particularly blood), chemicals, needles and other sharps. 

 

Occupational Exposure:                    Category I= Job involves tasks or procedures that have exposure to blood and potentially infectious materials during the performance of duties.

  





Skills/Requirements

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:                                            

  1. Accept and electronically receive laboratory specimens of blood, body fluids, urine, stool and swabs etc. for all sections of the laboratory.
  2. Separate specimens for particular sections of the lab.  Centrifuge samples requiring serum or plasma for assay.
  3. Deliver samples and corresponding label sets or orders to the appropriate department.  Chemistry specimens should be organized for each analyzer.
  4. Aliquot samples for outside reference laboratories using printed label sets and correct sample volumes.
  5. Follow instructions for sample preparation prior to shipping and batch and store at the appropriate temperature as required for sample shipment.
  6. Receive all emergency room specimens and STATS immediately and deliver to various testing areas as soon as possible after receiving, making certain technologists are aware of STAT or urgent sample.
  7. Collect assayed samples from chemistry, wrap with parafilm and place in racks in alphabetical order at the end of the shift.  Label all racks with date, shift and rack number. Store in refrigerator. Dispose of samples after one-week storage.
  8. Measure and record in computer the volume of all 24-hour urine’s received before aliquoting for chemistry.  Measure and log in CSF samples before taking the designated tube to each department where someone must sign for the sample.
  9. Maintain an adequate supply of disposables, including label printer paper.
  10. Routinely clean and disinfect daily the accessioning bench and trays.
  11. Fill in during emergencies at front reception area.
  12. Perform other job related duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
