JOB DESCRIPTION                                                                                                                    

The Electro-Mechanical Maintenance Apprenticewill be participating in a 4 year educational and training program to become a member of the factory maintenance team.  This person will be responsible for satisfactorily completing all AFL defined program requirements.  These requirements may include but not be restricted to the following:  completion of identified technical college courses leading to an associate degree with acceptable GPA performance; a rigorous skills evaluation, verification, and certification process; AFL cultural fit analysis; and personal performance/execution evaluation criteria.  Failure to satisfactorily meet program requirements will result in elimination from the program.  Successful completion of the program does not guarantee entrance into the AFL Maintenance Department if no opening exists.  Openings will be filled on the basis of performance.

 

The purpose of this position is to develop highly skilled maintenance personnel that are able to safely maintain our production line, machines, facilities and buildings.  They must be diligent in adhering to procedures, focused on producing the best quality results, being highly productive and mindful of costs.  The work environment is challenging, dynamic, and team-based.

 

The Electro-Mechanical Maintenance Apprentice will be accountable for meeting safety, quality, and production goals in support of our customers and business plan.

 

The Electro-Mechanical Maintenance Apprentice will report to the Facilities Engineering Manager.  Electro-Mechanical Maintenance Apprentices will be expected to develop skills and execute assigned focus area responsibilities for: reliability, parts purchasing, subject-matter knowledge, and preventive maintenance formation/execution.  In addition to the focus area responsibilities, Electro-Mechanical Maintenance Apprentices will execute assigned work schedules supporting the maintenance team as required in other focus areas.

 

The position is located at our Duncan, SC manufacturing facility which operates on a seven day, twenty-four hour schedule.  The successful candidate will work one of the assigned maintenance schedules which include both 10 or 12 hour shifts and rotating days. 

 

The successful candidate will exhibit the aptitude to successfully develop a blend of the knowledge, skills, and competencies to perform the job responsibilities outlined below.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES                                                                                                            

  • Understands, adheres to, and promotes the Environmental, Health & Safety policies of AFL Telecommunications.
  • To conduct scheduled preventive maintenance, install new equipment and maintain the building and facilities.
  • To follow Continuous Improvement Processes to increase Equipment Reliability and Productivity.
  • Understands and adheres to all maintenance and trades related codes.  Examples of such include the NEC, ASME, etc.
  • To conduct and apply condition based monitoring systems, predictive maintenance, and apply TPM philosophy.
  • Complete work orders and record necessary information for tracking purposes.
  • Accomplish maintenance task instructions as directed or scheduled.
  • Interface with suppliers and equipment manufacturers.
  • Maintain equipment records.
  • Maintain spare parts inventory.
  • Maintain tools
  • Order supplies for maintenance
  • Perform other duties as requested, directed or assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / COMPETENCIES                                                                             

  • Demonstrated Ability to work with Programmable Logic Controllers both Troubleshooting and Programming.
  • Solid Understanding of Facility/Building Systems: Power Delivery, Chilled Water, Air Compressors, and other related equipment.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and troubleshoot using Electrical Schematics, Wiring Diagrams, and Ladder Logic diagrams.
  • Demonstrated ability to program and troubleshoot AC / DC drives, motors and PLC control systems including the ability to access and troubleshoot the ladder logic programs with a laptop.
  • Demonstrated ability to Update Automated Electrical Control Systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM), Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and Root Cause Analysis programs.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair Pneumatic / Hydraulic and Mechanical systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical drawings.
  • Ability to utilize precision measuring instruments.
  • Experienced in welding.
  • Demonstrated Understanding proper use of Hand Tools.
  • Ability to execute basic maintenance machining on a manual lathe, drill press, saw, mill, and surface grinder.
  • Good time management skills.
  • Self-starter with integrity and confidence who strives to achieve even the most challenging environments with limited supervision.  Must be willing to call equipment manufactures for troubleshooting and repair advice.
  • Team player with well-developed interpersonal skills who is comfortable in a cross-functional, multi-cultural environment.
  • Mechanically oriented individual with the ability to solve problems and implement change.
  • Strong communication and writing skills with the ability to clearly explain issues.




Skills/Requirements
  • Must be able to meet college entrance requirements for this program.
  • Must have a measurable aptitude for the successful development of the required skills
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment assessments, background & reference checks. 
  • Must be willing to work a flexible work schedule.
  • Must have a good command of the English language, both written and spoken.
  • Industrial/manufacturing work experience is a plus but not required.
  • The selected candidate will be expected to acquire their own tools.

 

Physical demands:

  • Job involves sitting, standing, walking and lifting for periods of time throughout the day
  • Able to pass pre-employment physical / drug screen and ongoing random drug screens. 
  • Must be able to differentiate between color shades (cannot be color blind).
  • Must be able to lift between 15 and 40 pounds repeatedly on a daily basis.


Personal protective equipment requirements:

  • Safety Glasses must be worn at all times.
  • Steel toes shoes must be worn at all times.
  • Ear plugs will be required to be worn in some areas of the factory.
