AFL Telecommunications is an industry leader in providing fiber optic products, engineering expertise and integrated services to the telecommunications industry.  We manufacture, engineer, and install the fiber optic products and equipment that communications providers need to provide high-speed voice, video and data services to their customers. Our extensive experience in both design and application crosses all markets, from Telecommunications, Broadband and Wireless, to Electric Utility, OEM, Enterprise and Private Networks.

 

 

JOB DESCRIPTION                                                                                                                    

The Production Manager will be a member of the cable manufacturing leadership team and will be responsible for all aspects of production in the plant.  They will lead a team of professionals comprised of area flow managers, team leaders, and operators in a dynamic and fast-paced build-to-order manufacturing environment.

 

The Production Manager will be diligent and driven in applying their leadership and production management experience to meet safety, quality, production, and cost objectives.  They will be accountable for delivering tangible results in support of business plan objectives to include improvements in material yield, defect reduction, capacity utilization, productivity, delivery performance, cost management, work-in-process management, and inventory turns. 

 

The position will report to the Manufacturing Manager and is located at our Duncan, SC manufacturing facility which operates on a seven day, twenty-four schedule.

 

The successful candidate must meet the all of the knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience requirements outlined below.


 

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES                                                                                                            

  • Insure the plant is operated in accordance with all EHS requirements and that all safety concerns are properly addressed.
  • Insure the daily production and delivery plans are met. This includes setting and communicating priorities and coordinating the resolution of flow issues.
  • Drive accountability through all levels of the organization by setting clear performance expectations and objectives for all direct reports and the production teams.
  • Deliver continuous and sustainable improvements to the plant’s safety, quality, production, and cost performance.
  • Facilitate the professional development of the production team to insure skills are matched to evolving requirements as new products are introduced and improved processes are implemented.
  • Build an environment of teamwork by providing the necessary tools, training, and development to support meeting objectives.
  • Insure the production teams are well-informed of performance-to-targets, challenges, and successes by utilizing available media (boards, intranet, displays, etc.) to frequently communicate status and trends.
  • Drive fundamental improvements to production flow and productivity by measuring compliance to reference time standards for changeovers and production runs. 
  • Manage manufacturing expenses to forecast/budget including personnel, consumables, and other associated conversion costs.
  • Lead improvement efforts to reduce material variances attributed to operator performance and manufacturing efficiency.
  • Apply lean manufacturing principles and conduct continuous improvement activities such as kaizen events to eliminate waste.
  • Demonstrate consistency through steady leadership and adherence to business practices and procedures.
  • Support the development and execution of annual business plan objectives.
  • Lead, participate, and support cross-functional project teams to achieve defined objectives on-time and on-budget.
  • Provide support for R&D and industrialization production runs insuring that the process is capable of safely producing high quality product that meets item specifications, and productivity and cost targets.
  • Coordinate operations among production areas to avoid sub-optimization of plant performance.
  • Cultivate a positive working relationships with support groups including the supply chain, commercial, and development teams.

    • Standard manufacturing performance metrics for safety, quality, material yield, capacity utilization, productivity, delivery performance, cost management, work-in-process management, and inventory turns.
    • EHS and quality management systems including current ISO 9001 and 14001 standards.
    • Plant accounting including the use of ERP systems such as Oracle R12.
    • Standard HR and labor relations in a manufacturing workplace.
    • Workplace 5S, lean manufacturing, and basic industrial engineering.
  • Experience creating personnel development plans to meet succession and growth plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong business partnerships.
  • Strong analytical, time management and technical writing skills.
  • Intermediate or higher user of MS Office.
Skills/Requirements
  • BS degree or higher in industrial engineering or management preferred. Equivalent experience will be considered.
  • Six or more years of experience as a leader/supervisor/manager in a lean/JIT/process-driven industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Able to support off-shift and/or weekend operations.
