Job Description

Assistant Professor of English & LSS English/Reading – Valdosta

The Valdosta campus of Georgia Military College is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Professor of English & Learning Support Services English/Reading.  The ideal candidate will have experience teaching English and/or reading courses to adult learners.

GMC Valdosta operates on the quarter system offering five accelerated terms per year.  The campus serves approximately 2,100 students annually and employs 46 full-time employees and numerous part-time employees.  Courses are offered at the Valdosta Campus and Moody AFB during the morning, afternoon, evening and weekend hours.  Some courses are offered in a web enhanced format designed to provide a specific ratio of traditional in class instruction with online learning.  This position is a non-tenure track, 12-month renewable appointment. Duties include a teaching load of 20 quarter hours per term (Fall 1, Fall, Winter, and Spring), committee work, club assignments, and other duties and service to the college activities as assigned.  Teaching assignments will be assigned quarterly and may consist of courses at each location.  Evening teaching assignments are generally required to support the evening program.

The primary teaching load will be in the area of Learning Support Services.  The LSS program serves to assist students with deficiencies in core areas such as English and Reading.  The opportunity to teach college level English courses may be available on occasion.

Minimum requirements are a Masters degree in the field of English or a master’s degree in an associated field with at least 18 graduate semester hours or 30 graduate quarter hours in English.  Prior teaching experience with adult learners is highly desirable.  Teaching experience or coursework in the area of Reading is also highly desirable.

While “military” remains part of our name and is an important part of our history, modern day GMC is a typical community college.  There are no military obligations for our students or employees.  The GMC Valdosta campus supports the CCAF (Community College of the Air Force) associate degree program in addition to other Associate degree level programs through coursework offered on Moody Air Force Base.
