Job Description

The Elementary School Instructional Assistant will support the daily activities, planning, and supervision of students in the classroom, under the guidance and supervision of the classroom teacher or teaching specialist. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist teachers when requested in daily classroom activity planning and supervision

  • Work with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills as designed and prescribed by the teacher

  • Help students master equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher including computer technology

  • Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher

  • Guide children in developing social skills to work and play together in a variety of settings

  • Assist with such large group activities as independent work/practice, reading aloud, and storytelling and supervision of children during recess and play period

  • Participate in in-service training programs as assigned

  • Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully certified teachers

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent

  • English speaker with exceptional verbal and written communication skills

  • The ability to inspire children

  • Excellent knowledge of the relevant subject(s)

  • Excellent classroom control

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

 

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships

  • A good sense of humor

  • Artistic background preferred

  • Full understanding and support of the school's philosophy

This position is classified as a support staff position and reports to the Director of the Early Learning Center. General working hours are from 7:45 am - 3:45 pm, Monday through Thursday and 7:45 am - 12:45 pm (on site) & 2:30 pm - 3:45 pm (flexible) on Fridays. An annual limited period contract will be issued stipulating 186 working days within the year, as per the school’s published calendar.
