Job Description

The Board of Public Utilities is currently accepting applications for the position of Meter Reader. This position requires considerable walking in an outdoor environment.

Candidate should be:
• self-motivated
• able to work independently
• detail oriented
• possess ability to work with computers

Employees of the BPU must live within a designated residency boundary around the city limits. A high school diploma is required and applicant must pass a physical exam and drug test. A valid Kansas driver’s license is required.  This is a full time position with benefits, including health insurance and KPERS retirement.

Meter Reader


• Works independently without supervision and must meet the schedules and deadlines set by the supervisor
• Reads assigned customer meters on a regular basis and provides accurate reports of readings
• Informs supervisor of work in progress and completed and consults with him/her concerning problems which hinder the efficient completion of the duties and responsibilities of this position
• Assists supervisor in determining meter routes for the most efficient use of manpower and equipment
• Inspects system meters each month and detects meter tampering, broken meter seals and theft of power and reports these to his/her supervisor
• Observes all safety rules and regulations adopted by the Utility and encourages others to do the same
• Operates vehicles and/or equipment in a safe manner and within the regulations of all federal, state and local laws
• Develops and maintains effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, representatives of outside agencies and the public
• Performs manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects, bending, kneeling, climbing and operates departmental equipment;
• The work involves considerable walking; there is continual exposure to several disagreeable factors: weather may be inclement and work is often in isolated areas, sometimes required to deal with temperamental animals and customer issues.
