MISSION STATEMENT

POSITION/SCOPE WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION

  • This position reports directly and functionally to the Senior Specialist of Social and Behavioral Change Programs.  
  • This position will coordinate with Directors of other Program Units of Health Programs, and TOPS team members from various organizations, as needed.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Specialist for Social & Behavioral Change (SBC) Programs will contribute to the achievement of FH’s TOPS Grant deliverables.  The TOPS Program aims to provide highest-quality information, knowledge, and best practices for improved methodologies in Food for Peace funded food security program performance. Social and Behavioral Change is a cross-cutting technical area of relevance to all sectors engaged in food security programming, and is FH’s focal area and area of expertise within the TOPS Program. This position provides technical support to SBC programs worldwide in the two year cost extension of the USAID-funded TOPS program.

Skills/Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Key Result #1 – Serve as a subject matter expert for SBC for FH on the TOPS Program (40%).

  1. Serve as Co-chair of the Food Security and Nutrition Network SBC Task Force, guiding members, organizing meetings and webinars, and facilitating the creation of the annual work plan;
  2. Develop and modify SBC curricula, develop and provide capacity strengthening workshops as needed for Cooperating Sponsors in use of SBC methods and tools that will influence their behavior change messaging and programming;
  3. Provide technical assistance to food security practitioners on SBC design and implementation;
  4. Represent FH at TOPS and TOPS related trainings, meetings and webinars.

Key Result #2 – Develop capacity strengthening materials and provide training to food security staff in international non-governmental organizations worldwide (35%).

  1. Conduct learning needs and strengths assessments with INGO food security and nutrition implementing community to determine gaps in skills, tools needed, as well as strengths and promising practices to inform planning for trainings and knowledge sharing events;
  2. Plan and develop content, and facilitate workshops, such as Care Group Implementation, Designing for Behavior Change, and other SBC topics;
  3. Develop online SBC resources (such as narrated presentations, self-study modules);
  4. Follow up with workshops to obtain follow up information on application, replication, and collect case reports and examples of impact and experience from practitioners.

Key Result #3 -- Oversee and manage contractors and consultants for SBC/TOPS projects. (25%)

  1. Identify, contract, and manage consultants to conduct SBC capacity strengthening workshops such as Designing for Behavior Change (DBC), Care Groups Implementation, and other SBC topics;
  2. Identify, contract and manage contractors to translate SBC materials, and to maintain and update the Behavior Bank data base.

  • Has a vibrant personal relationship with Jesus Christ;
  • Is a consistent witness for Jesus Christ, maintains a courteous Christ-like attitude in dealing with people within and outside of Food for the Hungry;
  • Previous experience preferred in training and use of effective SBC information products, methods, and tools (e.g., Designing for Behavior Change, Barrier Analysis, Care Groups, PD/Hearth, QIVCs, and mini-KPCs for monitoring SBC adoption);
  • Previous experience in organizing trainings, conferences, and events preferred;
  • Excellent training and speaking skills in USAID-funded development programs;
  • Technical background in USAID funded health/nutrition, child survival, or Agriculture / Natural Resource Management interventions, with a strong focus on social & behavioral change preferred;
  • Previous experience with backstopping of MCH, agriculture, gender or other food security sectoral programs preferred;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google systems. Proficiency in PowerPoint for Windows, and Adobe Connect or Elluminate / Blackboard online conferencing software desirable;
  • Able to travel in the US and internationally up to 15% of time per year;
  • Able to sit at a computer for 8 hours a day doing repetitive motions on a keyboard;
  • Able to lift 25 pounds above shoulder height consistently;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Strong people skills;
  • Highly organized, able to prioritize tasks;
  • Able to consistently meet deadlines;
  • Able to stand for long periods, walking over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces at times.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Master of Public Health or MSPH preferred; Minimum of four years experience in backstopping USAID funded MCH or HIV/AIDS programs; Experience working with overseas community health projects in a developing country preferred; Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Fluency in English, written and spoken.  Fluency in Spanish or French is desirable.  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
