Job Description:                 PACU  Clinical Coordinator

Supports Director in achieving departmental vision and goals assisting with patient care as necessary as well as leadership/administrative duties.

               

Department:                         Operating Room Services

 

Responsible To:                   Director of Surgical Services

 

Licensure:                             Valid Florida RN License.

               

Experience:                          PACU and/or Critical Care experience required. Demonstrated leadership skills.  Demonstrated professional development with increasing responsibilities

 

Education/Training:            BLS and ACLS required. National certification required 6 month after hire.

 

Skills & Abilities:  Ability to proactively coordinate patient flow to achieve and maintain smooth, efficient department operations. Demonstrated conflict resolution skill. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple demands simultaneously

               

Physical Requirements:      Good physical condition to continually sit; frequently stand, walk, bend/stoop and squat; occasionally kneel, reach above shoulder level, and balance; ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, pull maximum over 50lbs with assistance; must continually be able to see, hear, speak, and use both hands to easily communicate.

 

Environmental Conditions:  Primarily works inside (75% of the time) and may experience the following hazards:  biological, needles and sharps, radiation, stress, noise, vibration, dust, fumes, and occasional temperatures extremes.

 

Occupational Exposure Category:   I = Job involves tasks or procedures that have exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials during the performance of duties.





Skills/Requirements

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Takes a lead role in the provision of patient care and department coordination. Applies both clinical and operational management skills to meet the established quality, patient satisfaction, financial, and operational goals of the department.  Implements program philosophy, objectives, standards of care and procedures on consultation with Director. Oversees and intervenes in departmental activities  to ensure smooth, safe operations.  Coordinates with Operating Room, Outpatient, SPD and other departments  through regular updates on  case progress; prevents operational delays by anticipating potential problems. 
  2. In coordination with Director, is responsible for coordinating and directing patient care, and other activities related to the department during assigned Clinical Coordinator shifts.  Assigns, coordinates and assists in the delivery of patient care ensuring compliance with physician orders and established policies and procedures.  Orchestrates patient flow.  Provides leadership and coordination of patient care staff and patient treatment. 
  3. Demonstrates the ability to recognize and intervene in life threatening emergencies, including the administration of emergency drugs, and defibrillator or other emergency treatment.  Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned area infant to geriatric.
  4. Collaborates with Director in hiring and termination of staff, progressive discipline and staff evaluations.   Serves as a resource to the staff.   Coaches, directs, supports and evaluates educational needs of staff.  Assists in developing and providing formal and informal learning experiences for staff through identification of staff clinical needs.  Participates in the orientation and/or on-the-job training of personnel. Huddles daily with care team to disseminate information.
  5.  Assists in scheduling staff based on patient acuity and staffing patterns.   Provides direct patient care consistent with the Registered Nursing Job description.  Functions as a clinical resource.  Observes and coaches staff in performance of clinical duties and interpersonal interactions. Monitors safety in administration of prescribed medication.  Monitors clinical documentation in the medical records to ensure completeness and accuracy and compliance with hospital and program standards. Interacts with family and referral sources.  Monitors the nursing process utilization, ensuring timely completion of the nursing assessment and care plans as well as appropriateness of content. Monitors clinical management of neurological, surgical, and medical emergencies. 
  6. Consistently uses tact, good judgment, and conducts self in a socially responsible manner as demonstrated by:  exemplary ethical conduct; refraining from discussing personal problems or confidential hospital or patient information to any unauthorized personnel.  Regularly attends in-service and staff meetings.  Makes his/herself available to the hospital during emergencies.
  7. Support department Director in ensuring compliance with hospital, program and nursing policies and procedures.  Assists, directs and delegates nursing personnel according to their capabilities to meet patient needs.  Continually evaluates the quality of nursing care delivered and collaborates with the director on patient care issues.  Reviews, assists, and promotes the development of policies and procedures in compliance with state, federal and regulatory requirements.
  8. Develops and maintains communication with physicians and the multi-disciplinary care team regarding patient’s status and needs.  Participates in multi-disciplinary teams meetings, representing the Nursing perspective on patient conditions/progress. Consistently strives to understand, anticipate, and meet the needs, expectations and satisfaction levels of patients and other “customers” and seeks feedback from others to help improve performance.  Participates in data collection for use in improvement of patient care.  Identifies and assists in the development of long and short term projects to meet patient, staff, unit or organizational needs.
  9. Provides the Director with information necessary for making decisions affecting patient care, staffing and program implantation.  Assists in preparation and control of department operational budget; monitors supplies/equipment, ordering/repairing as required to ensure the quality of care and operational standard are maintained. Ensures a safe, secure, clean environment for patients, staff and visitors. Ensures cost effectiveness in the use of personnel and supplies.  Monitors productivity of staff, use of time and the amount of work assigned.  Ensures that the productivity and actions of that group meet/support the overall operational goals of the department as established by department leadership. 
  10. Performs other job related duties as assigned, by the Director and Chief Nursing Officer.
