Job Description

The signal engineer will perform engineering/design duties in planning, design, installation oversight, system testing, operation, and maintenance of railroad and/or rail transit signal systems while working alongside a systems engineering team. Designs, develops and tests all aspects of a signaling system built to customer specifications and other contract requirements. Assigns tasks and provides direction to technicians. Delivers value-added engineering solutions, products and support to customers, who’s systems range from complex integrated control centers to sophisticated train-based systems that automate train operation and protection, interlocking systems that ensure safe running across a network, and a complete range of trackside products.

  • Manage & perform assigned tasks including scope, schedule of either new start or rehabilitative signal & communications projects..
  • Plan and design transportation systems and structures, following construction, client, federal, state, and local standards and laws, using design software and drawing tools such as Micro Station, AutoCAD etc.
  • Analyze and review the design and construction requirements to ensure match with customers' specifications.
  • Follow QA/QC policies and practices and Identify possible quality and safety issues within the scope of the project.
  • Technical Responsibilities:
    • Develop signal circuit designs, including automatic train control systems, vital microprocessor and relay-based interlockings, block signal systems, and highway crossing warning systems.
    • Design signal circuit drawing typicals.
    • Work on control center designs.
    • Review project specifications and drawings.
    • Assist with writing factory and field-test procedures.
    • Participate in testing and commissioning activities during factory and field-testing.
    • Investigate failures with signal circuit designs.
    • Identify possible safety issues within the scope of the project.
  • Perform site investigations as required.

 





Skills/Requirements

  • 15+ years’ experience in railroad signal design
  • Knowledge of the Federal Railroad Administration rules and AREMA standards.
  • Exposure to and experience in the following:
    • Product level safety analysis, including vital software.
    • Experience in  SCADA system design and testing; design and field installation of signal, communication, and electrical systems for Central Instrument Houses; signal circuit design for automatic block, interlocking track and signal circuits; and highway crossing warning devices. 
    • Signal systems, including software development, fiber optics, networking, RAMS, and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).
    • Software and hardware interfaces
    • Field inspection and the testing of railroad signal control systems, switching equipment, station lighting, security, and smoke/fire detection to ensure design specification compliance.
  • Working knowledge in the following software programs: Micro-Station; AutoCAD and VHLC; knowledge of Ladder Logic Programming
  • It would be a plus to have Positive Train Control (PTC) experience
