The Waste Sustainability Specialist will work as part of the Bon Appetit Management Company Foundation, with a focus on strengthening companywide efforts to reduce food waste from operations and divert existing waste from landfills. The Waste Sustainability Specialist will coordinate and improve existing programs, including: food recovery, composting, recycling, food waste awareness campaigns and the eco-clamshell reusable to-go container program. The individual will also manage relationships with nonprofit and governmental organizations relevant to waste reduction, and perform research to inform innovative programs that will further reduce waste and maintain Bon Appetit’s position as a leader on this issue.
Major Duties and Responsibilites include:
Work with Bon Appetit chefs and managers to improve waste reduction and diversion programs, including composting, recycling, food waste awareness campaigns and the eco-clamshell reusable to-go container program.
Manage companywide food recovery program and partnerships and support the launch of food recovery programs at Bon Appetit cafes around the country.
Develop and maintain training materials to assist Bon Apetit chefs and managers with waste reduction and diversion activities, including webcasts and implementation guides.
Collect, organize, and analyze data to track and communicate about waste diversion and reduction programs company wide.
Write and edit communications pieces that pertain to food waste issues and projects.
Attend relevant conferences, symposiums and events to represent Bon Appetit Management Company.
Identify strategic partnerships, perform research and think creatively about innovative approaches to reduce waste in the food system throughout the supply chain.
Work collaboratively with the development team to propose waste reduction strategies and language for potential contracts.
The following are required:
Strong organizational skills with great attention to detail and ability to manage multiple and competing priorities;
Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including comfort speaking publicly and with the media;
A strong track record of interest and experience working on sustainable food and agriculture issues;
Experience working on waste reduction and diversion issues;
Self-starter with ability to work independently and collaboratively;
Ability to spend up to 50% of time traveling and work independently and from home when not traveling; flexible schedule to include occasional evenings and weekends;
Familiarity with the food service or restaurant industry preferred;
Familiarity and experience with Life Cycle Assessment, waste management, composting and other organics diversion systems, disposables and packaging materials preferred.
High School Diploma, GED preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience required
Bachelor’s Degree of equivalent combination of education and experience required.
Master’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
1-3 years of experience working on food systems change and food waste issues in a culinary environment.
